No history of Spanish Colonial archaeology in Texas is complete without addressing the accomplishments of Dr. Kathleen K. Gilmore. When reviewing her nearly 50-year career as an archaeologist, one is hard-pressed to find a Texas mission, presidio, rancho, or settlement that Dr. Gilmore did not visit, research, excavate, or write about. Among her most important projects were the missions and presidio of San Xavier in present-day Milam County. While researching the site, Dr. Gilmore became...
Boquete Area Ceramics Classification (2010)
These are only some of the more common ceramics found in the Boquete area, and the dates are tentative. Dates given are the most inclusive possible in order to incorporate the different time spans assigned by various researchers. Bung Borers and Butter Pots: Comparing 18th-century Probate Records with Archaeological Evidence from the Chesapeake (2018)
Probate records from colonial Maryland offer a unique window into the lives of 18th-century property owners. Conducted by appointees of the Prerogative Court, often neighbors of the deceased, inventories give a sometimes idiosyncratic account of a person’s estate subject to the social and cultural prejudices of the appraisers. Juxtaposing archaeological finds recovered from Long Point Farm, an early 18th-century site in Oxford, Maryland, with the 1723 probate inventory of the property’s owner, a...
