The Texas Historical Commission sent this letter to Fort Sam Houston to inform them that the rail line trestle bridge that was being considered for removal was recently determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. As a result, the propose demolition of the structure will clearly have an "adverse effect" on the structure and its environment. Carbon copied to the letter is Michael Hilger, Army Corp of Engineers and Claudia Nissley, ACHP.

This letter reiterates and stresses the importance of preserving Building 1198 which is a World War I era aviation hangar. The agreement between the Texas Historical Commission and Fort Sam Houston was that the demolition of 27 other properties at Fort Sam Houston included a stipulation to preserve this significant historic resource through its disassembly and donation to a private museum organization. On February 22, 1993, Rick Bryant monitored backhoe trenching in the area of the new transportation complex. The area was used as a regimental barracks area during WWII, and it was believed that cement footings or floors from the buildings may have been located in the area to be leveled and graded for the new transportation complex buildings. The area was trenched by a back hoe to determine if any foundation remains were extant. No WWII or other historic or prehistoric remains were located....
