Granastadir

Part of: Iceland

The animal bone collection from Granastadir is both substantial and well documented, and provides an unusual opportunity to assess economic patterns of the mid-10th century in northern Iceland. The Granastadir collections are relatively rich in cattle, horse, and pig bones, but also have a significant number

of fish and molluscan remains indicating coastal contacts. High mortality among newborn lambs is evident in this collection, and metrical analysis of adult caprine bones indicates long-term developmental stress.
