Rockport Site 1984
Part of: US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District VCP
This collection is referred to as "Rockport Site 1984.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders and the box labels. The extent of this collection is three and a half linear inches. The Rockport Site 1984 was contained within two acidic accordion folders in an acidic box along with several other acidic brown accordion folders that contained documentation from other Rockport Generating Station archaeological investigations. The different document collections were kept separate according to the original housing. Anything pertaining to sites 12SP271, 12SP272 and 12SP291 was associated with Rockport Site 1984. Many of the documents had handwritten page numbers, which helped in the organization of the files and denoted which pages should be kept as a single unit. Two photographs were removed from this collection to a photography storage folder. The photographs were of the excavations at sites 12SP271, 12SP292 and 12SP291. The figure descriptions from the final report were used to identify the content of the photographs. The report indicated that one photograph showed sites 12SP271 and 12SP292. The processing archivist assumed that this was a typographical error in the report. Rather than 12SP292, the figure description should have read 12SP272. There was no other mention of site 12SP292 in any of the other field or report records.
This collection included a number of oversized materials. These materials include hand drawn field maps, photocopies of the field maps, and two computer printouts on perforated ribbon paper, which was still articulated. The handwritten field maps were drawn on graph paper, which was taped together with duct and non-archival pressure-sensitive tapes. These were removed and replaced with archival mending tissue tape. On some portions of the hand drawn maps, it was necessary to place mending tape on top of the non-archival pressure-sensitive tape that had been written on to maintain the pencil marks that were made on top of the original tape. A cleaning pad was utilized to clean the map surfaces, thereby removing accumulated dirt and grime. The original field maps were scanned, but the photocopies were not. The long computer printouts, which contained information about artifact and bag inventories, were not scanned, because the information on the printouts were duplicates of information contained on the original, handwritten artifact and bag inventory lists, which were scanned and are not oversized. For more information about the Rockport Site 1984 (Accession Number 1563), please refer to the document collections entitled Grandview Area (Accession Number 1407/1407A), Honey Creek Area 1978 (Accession Number 1409/1409A), Rockport Site N.D. (Accession Number 1420), and Rockport 1980 (Accession Number 1445).
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, investigation report, oversized material database, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the document folder listing, oversized materials labels, photographic materials database and records removal database sheet. For additional information on these materials refer to the finding aid.
