Beyond Academia: Zooarchaeological Case Studies from CRM and Other Nonacademic Spaces
Part of: Society for American Archaeology 90th Annual Meeting, Denver, CO (2025)
This collection contains the abstracts of the papers presented in the session entitled "Beyond Academia: Zooarchaeological Case Studies from CRM and Other Nonacademic Spaces" at the 90th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.
Modern zooarchaeology straddles the line between the academic and non-academic worlds with significant work being done by professionals working in both areas. Despite increased interest in the specialty from both academic and non-academic archaeologists, there still exists a gap between the two worlds. By highlighting work completed in non-academic spaces alongside work that is strictly academic, we can begin to close this gap by building working relationships between academic and non-academic zooarchaeologists. A companion to the Beyond Academia forum from the 2024 annual meeting, this symposium highlights zooarchaeological work that is completed in CRM and other non-academic spaces. Through case studies and data analytics, the goal of this symposium is to illustrate the significance of zooachaeological data outside of the academic institution.
