Collection | Some vessels were added to MimPIDD as part of special collections. These are also available as “child” collections within MimPIDD, and those links provide detailed history of the collections. Rodeck – The Rodeck Collection consists of photographs of Mimbres pottery made by Dr. Hugo Rodeck in 1952. This material is in the University of Colorado museum’s collections (accession 2003-03). In MimPIDD, some Rodeck photos supplement other photos of known vessels, in many other cases, the Rodeck photos and data are all that is known about the vessels. A subset of the Rodeck collection consists of vessels from the NAN Ranch Ruin owned by Richard R. Ellison. West – 92 vessels originally collected by Robert W. West. The vessels were loaned to the Arizona State Museum, where they were accessioned and catalogued. They have since been sold and are thought to be private collections.

Confidence Notes | VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | uncategorized | none | none | true |
Confidence | Confidence, a new variable as of 2019, indicates how the vessel can be used for research, based on two criteria. (1) Whether it is in a public institution or a private collection. Material in private collections may be useful in some analyses, but privately owned vessels may not be published (see “Ethics and Permission to Access MimPIDD”). In many cases, vessels listed as being in private collections are no longer traceable, all that is known about them is the data in MimPIDD. (2) The likelihood that the design is authentic or has been altered. Sadly, as Mimbres pottery became more desirable and valuable in the mid-20th century, designs were sometimes altered or outright faked. In many cases, the newly painted designs – on authentic bowls – are difficult to detect (Hegmon et al. 2017). Research confidence is determined primarily based on the provenance of the vessel, that is, on what is known about how it was excavated and the subsequent history of ownership. Those professionally excavated and then deposited in a reputable institution are considered “authentic.” Those from unknown original sources that were deposited in reputable institutions before 1950 are considered “likely authentic.” Those in the Rodeck Collection, photographed primarily in 1952, are similarly considered “likely authentic” as are those in the West Collection. Vessel classified as “authentic” or “likely authentic” may have undergone heavy restoration (e.g., gluing pieces back together, filling in gaps with plaster, even enhancing painted areas), but it is unlikely that their designs were was altered or faked. “Unknown” means we do not know that the designs is authentic or likely authentic. While vessels with this classification may be useful for some kinds of research, we caution against using them in analyses that focus on the details of design content, especially those pieces that depict humans or other especially interesting scenes.
VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | uncategorized | none | none | true
Maximum Diameter | Measured in centimeters except where indicated.
VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | uncategorized | none | none | true
Temporal Style | The chronologically significant style, as per Shafer and Brewington (1995). Note that the use of multiple terms, separated by commas, indicates that the vessel could be any one of these types (e.g., Style I, Style II). In contrast, a slash (e.g., Style I/II) indicates that the vessel is intermediate between these two types. How this was determined is in Temporal Style Basis.
VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | uncategorized | none | none | true
#MimPIDD ID | mimpidd_id is a unique identifier for each vessel; in some cases there are several images associated with a single vessel/ID. Most values are integers, but occasionally the integer has an alpha character included ( e.g., 99999A). There are also some decimal values (e.g., 39.1 and 39.2). Not all numbers have been assigned. The first roughly 7000 MimPIDD IDs are the same as the old Mimbres Archive number, referring to the original collection of images assembled by LeBlanc and loaned to the Maxwell Museum. “MA” seen in some comments means “Mimbres Archive.”
