Part of the Cemochechobee project

Creator(s): Veterans Curation Program

Year: 2012

Summary

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District archaeological collection was sent to the Veterans Curation Project’s (VCP) Augusta laboratory in October 2009. The VCP Augusta laboratory was established by USACE, St. Louis District’s Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds and staffed through Brockington and Associates, Inc. Human skeletal remains (HSR) were removed from the Cemochechobee collection by Brockington and Associates, Inc., in Norcross, Georgia, prior to the materials being sent to the VCP lab. Because of the sensitive nature of human remains, it was determined that the HSR would not be processed by the veterans staffing the VCP laboratory, but would be processed by the VCP lab managers. The remains stayed in Norcross until a break in VCP sessions, when they were transported to Augusta and the lab managers processed the materials without veterans being present. The procedures employed by the VCP Augusta laboratory to re-house the archaeological material from the Cemochechobee investigation are discussed below. Upon completion of this curation management project, this collection will be sent to University of Georgia, Athens for permanent curation.

The procedures employed by the St. Louis VCP to rehouse the archaeological material from the Cemochechobee investigation are discussed in the Artifact Report. The report can be found in tDAR at https://core.tdar.org/document/426639.
