Symposium on Salvage Archaeology

Editor(s): John M. Corbett

Year: 1961

Summary

In March of 1955, Dr. Frederick Johnson, Secretary of the Committee for the Recovery of Archaeological Remains, on behalf of the Committee, suggested that a symposium on salvage archaeology might be held during the Annual Meetings of the Society for American Archaeology in May. He asked Drs. Frank H. H. Roberts, Jr. of the Smithsonian Institution and John M. Corbett of the National Park Service to formulate an agenda for such a symposium and make such arrangements as might be necessary with the Society's Program Committee. Through the kindness of Dr. George I. Quimby, Program Chairman for the Meetings, time for the symposium was scheduled on Friday, May 6, 1955. Through the courtesy of Dr. Glen A. Black and the University of Indiana, a tape recorder and operator were furnished and a record of the proceedings made. The proceedings, therefore, as recorded on the tape have been transcribed with as little minor editing as possible in order to preserve the informal atmosphere which prevailed during the symposium.
