Additional Paleoindian Campsites Adjacent To the Holcomb Site

Summary
In an earlier analysis of the Holcombe Paleo-Indian complex of sites, James Fitting has postulated the existence of additional living areas "to round out the symmetry of the site" (Fitting 1965). Even before the paper had cleared the press, Jerry DeVisscher, finder of the Holcombe site, discovered one such additional occupation area while digging a rather deep test pit 24 feet north of the area excavated by the University of Michigan during the summer of 1961 (Fitting, DeVisscher and Wahla 1966).
The present paper will describe, first, this particularly prolific northern extension of the original Holcombe site under the designation "Holcombe Extension A." A second occupation area found to the east of the site margin is described under ''Holcombe Extension E." These are followed by reports covering three additional occupation areas, two of which are Paleo-Indian camp locations, the other a small, multicomponent site near the southern end of the Holcombe site.
Also included are horizontal artifact provenience diagrams for two of the locations which should help the reader visualize the actual layout of these campsites from the distribution pattern of chippage concentration and artifact occurrence indicating ancient work areas within the site. Also presented are some more or less personal views on Holcombe flint sources, a discussion of the site's gravers and the apparent lack of true burins, an hypothesis regarding the lack of fluting on certain Holcombe (and other) projectile points and other pertinent observations.
