Summary
An archeological and paleontological survey of the Lower Platte Basin was first made in the spring of 1947? and the results of the survey reported in a preliminary appraisal issued during the fall of the same year. During the summer of 1948 a preliminary survey of the potential Cushing Reservoir area was made by the Laboratory of Anthropology, University of Nebraska, and a supplementary report of the work issued in 1952.2 Within the period of November 7th to November 16, 1950, a reconnaissance unit consisting of Robert B. Gumming, Jr. and James M. Shippee made additional surveys within the Lower Platte Basin. The Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Platte River Area, informed the River Basin Surveys office of an Indian burial found by one of the surveying crews while they were placing a monument near the southwest end of the potential Cushing Dam axis. This burial was excavated during the period of November 7th and 8th, 1950.
During the period of November 9th to November 14, 1950, a preliminary reconnaissance was made of the areas to be affected by the potential Sherman Reservoir, potential Sherman Feeder Canal, potential Woods Park Canal, and the potential Sargent Canal. Another group of Indian burials found by a Bureau of Reclamation triangulation party while placing a monument in the general vicinity of the junction of Timber Creek and the Cedar River, in Nance County, Nebraska, was excavated on November 15, 1950. These burials were in the area of the Cedar Rapids Division of the Lower Platte Basin.
