Summary
This cultural resource survey involved the examination of approximately 1,013 acres of land on the Dyess Air Force Base in Taylor County, Texas. During this investigation, two previously unrecorded archaeological sites were discovered. Sites 41TA183 and 41TA184 are both situated on a hill top in the northwest portion of the base. Since both sites are situated well above riverine settings, neither has been subjected to any alluvial deposition. However, these sites were heavily disturbed by construction and subsequent soil deflation. Site 41 TA183, located along the base fence line, is frequently plowed to maintain a fire break for the base. Three projectile points diagnostic of the Late Archaic were recovered from 41TA183 and one point diagnostic of the Middle Archaic was found at 41TA184. Additionally, two localities were noted where prehistoric artifacts were recovered, but the artifacts were in questionable contexts. Locality A is located in the floodplain of the Little Elm Creek, but the artifacts at this site appear to have been incorporated with sediments brought in from another location. No diagnostic materials were recovered from this site. Locality B is situated within a rechanneled drainage. Four artifacts, including an Archaic point, were dispersed over 90 m within the drainage. None of the sites is considered potentially eligible for listing on the National Register for Historic Places since all of them lack integrity.
