STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN ANALYSIS AT THE LIGHTNING SPRING SITE, NORTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1993

Summary

Ten stratigraphic samples were examined from the Lightning Spring Site to

provide information concerning the vegetation communities of this area during the McKean occupation (before 4000 BP) and between that time and the present. Single stratigraphic samples were examined from each of the strata exhibiting evidence of McKean occupation. In addition, single samples were examined from two Middle to Late Archaic occupation strata, and a Late Prehistoric occupation stratum immediately below the present ground surface. Evidence of prehistoric vegetation from the Lightning Springs Site is compared with that of the Mill Iron Site from southeastern Montana.
