STRATIGRAPHIC POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR SITE BERGER XE-2736, FIELD BROOK PROJECT, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Thomas E. Moutoux
Year: 2002
Summary
The Field Brook Project involves archaeological investigations for replacement of the bridge
that carries S 1015 over Field Brook in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Excavations included
five trenches, three of which were sampled stratigraphically for pollen. Upon examination of the
stratigraphic sequence, two of these profiles were selected for pollen analysis (Columns 1 and 2).
Stratigraphic pollen analysis was designed to provide a record of vegetation for individual levels
within these profiles that would, in turn, be interpreted to reflect paleoenvironmental conditions.
In addition, a single organic mat sample, yielding a radiocarbon age of 14,400 BP, was submitted
for pollen and macrofloral analysis to determine what the mat was made of and to identify plants
in the area when the mat formed.
