EXAMINATION OF BULK SOIL, IDENTIFICATION OF DETRITAL CHARCOAL, AND AMS RADIOCARBON AGE DETERMINATION OF SAMPLES FROM NORTH FORK RED RIVER, OKLAHOMA

Author(s): Peter Kovacik

Year: 2011

Summary

A total of nine bulk soil samples and twenty detrital charcoal samples collected along the North Fork Red River in the Red River Basin near Altus Dam and Reservoir, Oklahoma, were examined to recover organic fragments suitable for radiocarbon age determination. These samples were recovered from stream deposits along the North Fork Red River. The botanic components and detrital charcoal were identified, and the material that was potentially radiocarbon-datable was separated. A total of eleven radiocarbon dates were obtained on charcoal and one charred botanic item from these samples.
