Archaeological Investigation of 38CH1025 at the Pointe at RiverTowne Country Club, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
Author(s): Eric C. Poplin; Kara Bridgman; Patrick Sievert
Year: 2002
Summary
From June 1999 through March 2002, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted data recovery investigations at 38CH1 025 at the Pointe at RiverTowne Country Club on Parkers Island in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The site is located in Charleston County and was intermittently occupied from the Ceramic Late Archaic through the Late Woodland periods. Wando ceramics
define the primary occupation of the site. Two of three oyster shell refuse middens at 38CH1025 display distinct strata that reflect occupational episodes at the site. One or more of these strata contain predominantly Wando ceramics. Charcoal from these strata produced radiocarbon dates of AD 1040 and AD 670 (Beta 144360 and Beta 144361, respectively). These are the first radiocarbon
dates associated with Wando ceramics. Ceramics of this series occur primarily along the Wando River in Charleston and Berkeley counties. Tempering with limestone or other local materials (e.g., crushed iron concretions) characterizes these ceramics. The discreet geographic range of Wando ceramics suggests the presence of a local Woodland population who exchange information and
technology within the broader populations of the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
