Archaeological Site Identification Survey of 3,384 in the Avon Park Air Force Range

Summary

Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) was contracted by Ecology and Environmental, Inc. to conduct a cultural resource assessment survey of 3,384 acres of the Avon Park Air Force Range (APAPR), located in Highlands and Polk Counties, Florida. This archaeological investigation was performed to assist Ecology and Environmental, Inc. and the Southwest Division Naval Facilities Engineering

Command in complying with state and federal guidelines.The goal of the survey was to locate, delineate, identify and assess all cultural resources within the proposed project area, and to determine their significance and potential eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with National Register Criteria (36 CFR 60.4). The project area includes AP APR property located west, south, and east of Alpha Range and Unit 6. More specifically, the project area includes all or portions of Sections 1, 2, and 12 in Township 32 South, Range 30 East, Sections 5, 6, and 7 in Township 33 South, Range 31 East, Sections 19, 29, 30, 31, 32 in Township 32 South, Range 31 east, and Sections 23, 24, 25, 26, 35, and 36 in Township 32 South, Range 30 East as seen on the Lake Arbuckle NE quadrangle map (1952 [photo revised 1972]). In addition, the project area includes all or portions of Sections 29 and 32 in Townships 32 South, Range 31 East, and Section 5 in Township 33 South, Range 31 East as seen on the Fort Kissimmee NW quadrangle map (1952 [photo revised 1972]). The field methodology consisted of a thorough pedestrian survey combined with subsurface testing. The pedestrian inspection was conducted to locate artifacts and/or historic structural remains in areas of exposed ground surface throughout the tract. Areas inspected included roadways, borrow pits, plowed fields, and other areas of ground disturbance.
