Phase I and Phase II Archaeological Investigations, Avon Park Air Force Range, Polk and Highlands Counties, Florida

Summary

This report presents the results of Phase I and Phase II archaeological investigations on Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) in Polk and Highlands counties, Florida. This work was conducted by Geo-Marine, Inc. (GMI) under a contract (DACA63-00-D-0006, Delivery Order 0036) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, acting on behalf of the Air Combat Command (ACC) and APAFR. The purpose of this study is to provide the APAFR with data for use in the management of its cultural resources in partial fulfillment of its obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act and other applicable cultural resources legislation. Phase I survey resulted in the discovery of eight archaeological sites, none of which is considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Phase II NRHP eligibility testing was conducted on three archaeological sites. Based on these investigations, one site is recommended as eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Another site was tested to determine whether damage from 2004 Hurricane Jeanne had adversely affected the site’s eligibility status; the results of this work indicate that site’s eligibility status has not been significantly altered and remains eligible for NRHP inclusion. The third site is recommended as ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
