A Bibliography of Northeast Historical Archaeology, 1987–2006

Summary

Twenty years have passed since the first CNEHA bibliography (Starbuck 1986), which included nearly all historical archaeology literature published within the area served by CNEHA up through the fall of 1987. The original CNEHA bibliography consisted of 1,884 citations, reflecting at least 60 years of research in the 7 provinces, 13 states, and the District of Columbia that are represented by CNEHA. In 1987 it may have appeared that traditional publishing would decline and be replaced by the “gray literature” of cultural resource management, but that has not occurred. Today articles pertaining to historical archaeology in the Northeast appear most frequently in the journals Northeast Historical Archaeology, Historical Archaeology, IA, The Journal of the Society for Industrial Archeology, Archaeology of Eastern North America, North American Archaeologist and Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology, as well as in the magazines Archaeology, National Geographic, Expedition, Smithsonian and American Archaeology.

Also, the journals published by state and provincial archaeological societies now contain nearly as many articles about historical archaeology as they do about aspects of prehistory. At the same time, there has been a veritable explosion of books on historical archaeology topics, especially by such university presses as University Press of Florida, University Press of Virginia, University of Tennessee Press, Cambridge University Press, University Press of New England, and others. The result is that this new bibliography contains 2,087 citations pertaining to the Northeast. The current state of publications in our field appears very healthy indeed.
