Summary
Paciulli, Simmons & Associates, Ltd., requested a Phase IA cultural resources survey associated with the planned Shoot House and Urban Assault Compound, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The project area is located in the north central portion of the Fort A.P. Hill Military Reservation and is composed of approximately 61 square hectares (150 square acres). The goal of this cultural resources assessment was to determine if any known historic properties were located in the APE and to determine the likelihood of unrecorded cultural resources being located there. High, medium, and low probability areas for cultural resources were identified and appropriate testing strategies recommended for each type. Background research and limited field investigations were utilized to accomplish these goals.
Fieldwork included the excavation of 38 shovel tests; 10 of these were positive, and resulted in the identification of 2 archaeological sites, both late nineteenth-/early twentieth-century domestic sites, and one military-related refuse scatter less than 50 years old. Additional testing is needed at both sites to determine if they are potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. No additional testing is needed at the refuse scatter due to its recent age. Additional intensive-level (Phase 1B) survey is recommended in selected portions of the project area.
This report also contains the artifact catalog as an appendix.
