POLLEN ANALYSIS OF GROUNDSTONE AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF LITHIC ARTIFACTS FROM CA-SDI-1313/14791, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Summary

Site CA-SDI-1313/14791 encompasses an area measuring approximately 60 m

(east/west) by 230 m (north/south) and consists of a moderately dense to dense deposit of artifacts including debitage, and flaked and groundstone tools. It is situated on a stream terrace at the confluence of San Mateo and Cristianitos Creeks in the northern portion of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, San Diego County, California. Groundstone tools recovered from the site were washed to recover pollen derived from processing activities, and associated soil control samples were processed and analyzed for pollen to determine possible environmental contaminants. A selection of flaked stone artifacts also were submitted for protein residue analysis to determine plant or animal resources that were processed. These analyses provide additional information about the subsistence practices of the site occupants. Previous radiocarbon dates obtained on bone fragments from the area reflect multiple occupations including early San Dieguito (9410–9090 calibrated BP), early La Jolla I and II (7440–7000 calibrated BP, 6680-6530 and 6520–6500 calibrated BP, respectively), later La Jolla III (2960–2865 calibrated years BP), and a limited interval during the Late Prehistoric period (500–630 calibrated BP), likely reflecting the ancestral Luiseño (Cummings and Puseman 2013).
