Cultural Resources Literature Search and Survey of Portions of Nogales Wash and Potrero Creek, Southern Arizona
Author(s): Steven D. Shelley; Jeffrey Altschul
Year: 1987
Summary
During October and November of 1986, Statistical Research conducted a cultural resources survey and archival search for the Los Angeles District, Corps of Engineers for a proposed flood control project along Nogales Wash and Potrero Creek, near the city of Nogales, Arizona. This work was to expand upon a literature search and field inspection conducted by New World Research, Inc. (Phillips and Swann 1984). Two of the finds recorded by Phillips and Swann (1984) were investigated through a combination of field checks and archival research. During the course of the survey six finds, one historic site, and two multicomponent sites were recorded.
The results of the survey indicated that one multicomponent site (AZ EE:9:104) may be a buried prehistoric village. More work is necessary to determine the exact nature of the site and its National Register eligibility. A second multicomponent site (AZ EE:9:105) appears to be associated with, or part of, Pete Kitchen's Ranch, a property on the National Register of Historic Places. Avoidance of adverse impacts to this site is recommended. The remaining recorded resources do not appear to be eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, and no further work is recommended in these cases.
