Cultural Resource Archaeological Survey, PIN 2016.77.101, Route 12 Improvements, Town of Trenton (MCD #06520), Oneida County, New York
Summary
This report includes background and field research in advance of construction entailed in PIN 2016.77.101.
Photographs were taken of the project area to illustrate any disturbances, as well as to document field conditions, and project area context. Prior co excavations, a walkover survey was done, with additional focus on areas where potential MDSs were located, according to historic map information. No foundations or other structural features were identified during this walkover survey. The archaeological testing was completed through the use of shovel test pits. Of the 78 total shovel test pits excavated, 33 (42.3%) contained cultural material.
In many cases, historic remains were recovered along with modern debris. Two (2) prehistoric flakes were recovered during this Phase l reconnaissance survey at the northeastern most extent of the APE as provided by DOT. These flakes, however, were mixed with modem debris in road fill soils and are not considered 10 be part of any prehistoric site within the project boundaries for PIN 2016. 77. A total of 162 artifacts were recovered during tbis survey. Aside from the two extant historic structures within the project boundaries, and the three possible map documented structure locations. the majority of the cultural remains recovered can likely be attributed to the accumulation of roadside refuse over the long history of Route 12.
As a result of this survey. no further work is recommended within the APE for PIN 2016.77. This is because of the lack significant cultural deposits identified within the APE as tested. The low density of the artifacts, with little variety, as well as the fact that no features were identified would suggest the site as tested has little research potential. However, if the project boundaries are enlarged or are shifted, addition archaeological investigation would be recommended.
