Summary

The goal of this project is to complete a Site Examination for the Henry Stacy Site (NYSM #12283) so that information can be collected to assess the site’s eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places prior to the completion of NYSDOT PIN 3805.44.121 (3 of 5) in the Town of New Haven, Oswego County, New York. Cultural deposits at the Henry Stacy Site cover the entire project area and there were no negative Phase II excavation units. Depth of cultural deposits varied between 25 and 117cm below ground surface.

The archaeological component of the Henry Stacy Site is related to the occupation and use of this house lot as a 19th century farmstead. It was run by several families, notably the Davis’ from probably the 1840s to around 1860, the Morgan’s from 1866 to 1874, and the Stacy’s from 1874 to 1922. The artifact assemblage is from a 19th century sheet midden and subject to several interpretive restraints related to mixing and indiscrete temporal and functional deposits. The principal goal of Phase II analysis in determining eligibility for the Henry Stacy Site is to associate any remains recovered from this sheet midden with individual households or household types.

In total, 8m² of excavation (1.5% of the Project Area) was performed at the Henry Stacy Site including 13 50cm² units on a 5 meter grid and four 1m² test units to further investigate areas of interest identified during by the grid units. One of the larger units, Unit 15, was extended a further 1 x .75m² to expose more of a feature. All together the excavations produced a total of 1592 artifacts, mostly domestic artifacts including ceramics and vessel glass, and architectural debris.

The site could be potentially impacted by replacement of the culvert but based on the lack of temporally and functionally discrete strata and the inability to exactly date the creation of the soil features or the construction of the house, the Henry Stacy Site is considered to have limited future research potential and is not eligible for the National or State Register of Historic Places. No further work is required.
