POLLEN, MACROFLORAL, AND ORGANIC RESIDUE (FTIR) ANALYSIS FROM SITES 42KA7714 AND 42KA7715, KANE COUNTY, UTAH

Summary

Sites 42KA7714 and 42KA7715, Kane County, Utah, were documented during monitoring of Highway 89 construction in the Kanab Canyon vicinity (MOAC 13-307 project). An isolated basin-shaped hearth (42KA7714) provided a radiocarbon date of AD 970-1025. This basin yielded charcoal, fire-altered rock, and bone fragments, but no other artifacts (Hanna Romes, personal communication June 23, 2015). Macrofloral and pollen analysis was requested for two samples from Feature A, site 42KA7714.

Located slightly to the north 42KA7715 displayed several features, including a basinshaped pit structure (Feature A), a small basin-shaped depression possibly used as a storage pit (Feature B), and a potential roasting feature (Feature C) (Hanna Romes, personal communication June 23, 2015). All features exhibited disturbance. Feature A, yielded a radiocarbon date of AD 235-385, placing its affiliation with Basketmaker II, but provided no culturally affiliated artifacts. Located southeast of Feature A, Feature B fill was distinguished from the Layer II horizon by charcoal, staining, and large pebbles, with surrounding flakes and one metate recovered north of the feature (Hanna Romes, personal communication June 23, 2015). Feature C, containing black silty sand and charcoal flecking, located north of other site features, was associated with a metate, mano, core, and single ceramic sherd (Hanna Romes, personal communication June 23, 2015). In total, twenty samples, including sediment controls, were submitted from 42KA7715 for pollen, macrofloral, and organic residue (FTIR) analysis. Nine samples submitted from non-feature site contexts complemented the four samples from Feature A, three samples from Feature B, and four samples for Feature C.
