An Archaeological Monitoring Project Conducted Along the Old Crosscut Canal in Eastern Phoenix, Arizona

Author(s): James B. Rodgers

Year: 1997

Summary

Under contract with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, Scientific Archeological Services has just completed an archeological monitoring investigation along the western bank of the Old Crosscut Canal in eastern Phoenix, Arizona. The purpose of this study was to relocate and evaluate the potential significance of AZ U:9:100 NRI. This archival site designates a poorly known locus of prehistoric Hohokam artifacts that was originally recorded in 1986 and is now threatened to be impacted by the drainage improvement of the Old Crosscut Canal. This reconstruction project is being undertaken by the FCDMC and the City of Phoenix, with Ames Construction Inc. being its prime contractor.

The Old Crosscut Canal itself is a federal facility of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and, thus, SAS performed all its monitoring activities according to specific provisions of a formal permit required by the Archeological Resources Protection Act of 1979.
