Archaeological Monitoring of the Relocated Salt River Project Well Site on the Mesa Terrace North of McKellips Road, Mesa, Arizona

Year: 1998

Summary

Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has completed an archaeological monitoring effort for the Salt River Project (SRP) in Mesa, Arizona. Monitoring of construction work was conducted over the course of three partial days, from March 31 to April 2, 1997 by one archaeologist. Roughly nine person-hours were expended during the fieldwork. The proposed SRP project area was the location for a new well site, which replaced an abandoned well located within the newly expanded right-of-way for McKellips Road. The new well site was 35 to 50 m north of McKellips Road and roughly 13 to 35 m west of the modern Consolidated Canal (Figure 1). The 440 m2 project area was on lands jointly administered by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Salt River Project. Northland conducted the monitoring project for the Salt River Project, under Arizona State Museum Permit No. 97-14BL. The purpose of the monitoring effort was to search for historic and prehistoric canals that traversed along the Mesa Terrace escarpment. For example, the Utah Canal constructed in 1878 was located in the vicinity of where the new SRP well site was built.Northland located and recorded one artifact and two features (one buried, one surface) during the monitoring effort. The features were recorded as part of AZ U:9:180(ASM), which may be a prehistoric precursor to the Utah Ditch. South of the project area and slightly downslope from the buried canal was a length of an open ditch that was a field lateral.
