Summary

Soil Systems, Inc. has recently completed data recovery investigations at 30 Hohokam, Protohistoric and Historic sites on the Ak-Chin Indian Reservation south of Maricopa, Arizona. Fieldwork was conducted between April and October of 1985 on the west half of the reservation prior to development of farm lands by the Ak-Chin Indian Community. The work was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Central Arizona Project Indian Distribution System authorized by Congress to allot Central Arizona Project waters for Indian farm development. Soil Systems is under contract to the Ak-Chin Farms, an enterprise owned and operated by the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Funding for the project was provided by a grant to the Ak-Chin Farms under the Federal Small Loans Program, Reclamation Small Loans Act. This project is the first archaeological data recovery program authorized in Arizona by this federal grant program. The farm development project is being designed and managed by Franzoy-Corey Engineers and Architects. The Bureau of Reclamation, Arizona Projects Office serves in an official government review capacity and the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office oversees archaeological compliance for the agency. We are pleased to report that the cooperation between the private sector, various agencies and the Ak-Chin Indian Community has been excellent and has contributed to a very successful program. SSI is currently in the process of analyzing the mass of data recovered from the 30 sites investigated last summer and writing site reports. At this time none of the analyses are complete. Therefore, the preliminary results reported here today are subject to refinement in the coming months as these data are synthesized into the final report. The research design is currently at the printers and will be available for distribution in the next two weeks. Our first annual report is scheduled to be delivered to Franzoy-Corey on May 15th and should be available for distribution shortly thereafter. We would like to take the opportunity today to review the four problem domains presented in the original research design and assess these research themes against the results of the fieldwork and the analyses conducted to date.
