US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - Montana
Summary
In September 1997, St. Louis District personnel visited the Montana Army National Guard (MTARNG) Headquarters in Helena, the State Historic Preservation Office of Montana in Helena, and the University of Montana in Missoula, to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on federally owned or federally supported MTARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated to archaeological collections recovered from MTARNG facilities. To date, 88 archaeological sites have been recorded on Limestone Hills Army National Guard Training Site. Twenty-nine archaeological sites have been recorded on Fort William Henry Harrison. No historic properties located on MTARNG facilities have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, although 14 sites have been determined to be eligible, two are potentially eligible, and 101 are not eligible. The extent, nature and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on MTARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
