Summary
In order to assist the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Walla Walla District (NWW), in its long-term goal of compiling a comprehensive spatial database of documented archaeological and historical-period resources within or near its managed properties, Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), used a portion of project-designated American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds to compare and compile available spatial and attribute data from a variety of state and federal sources into a single districtwide geographic information system (GIS) database.
Data sources included State Historic Preservation Offices in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon; baseline data compilations conducted by the USACE, the Bonneville Power Authority, and other agencies; and hard-copy topographic maps in the possession of the USACE. SRI reviewed and compared these data into a single GIS database, noting conflicts and inconsistencies and resolving these as much as possible.
The resulting compiled database includes 2,640 spatial features on or near USACE-NWW-managed properties, representing 1,443 archaeological sites, 1,035 cultural resource surveys, 7 linear historical-period features, and 155 historical-period locations, primarily consisting of historical-period buildings. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 53 specialists.
