Archaeological Testing of the Salt River Project McReynolds Substation Site, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Tiffany C. Clark
Year: 2004
Summary
Desert Archaeology, Inc., has completed archaeological testing of a 2.2-acre site for the proposed Salt River Project (SRP) McReynolds Substation located in southern Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The work was initiated due to the possibility that archaeological remains associated with the Lombeye Ruin, AZ T:12:109 (ASM), a National Register-eligible site, may be present in the project area. Testing began on 25 May 2004, under the direction of Tiffany Clark, and was completed on 2 June 2004. A total of 150 person-hours was expended in this effort. Fieldwork was conducted in accordance with the testing plan prepared by Desert Archaeology (Henderson and Clark 2004a). The objective of the testing program was to determine if buried archaeological remains were present within the substation site and, if found, to assess their extent, integrity, and significance. A total of 464 linear m (1,522 ft) of trench was cut during testing. This work resulted in the discovery of two possible pithouse features in the northcentral portion of the project area. Limited test excavations in one of the features revealed the remains of an insubstantial and poorly preserved fieldhouse structure. The findings of this study suggested that additional data recovery efforts are not warranted as such excavations were not expected to yield information that will significantly contribute to the current understanding of Lombeye Ruin. Background information on the project, descriptions of field methods, the results of the testing program, and a recommendation that construction activities proceed as planned are presented in this report.
