Black Mesa: Survey and Excavation in Northeastern Arizona - 1968
Author(s): George J. Gumerman
Year: 1970
Summary
During the month of June and part of July, 1968, the Center for Anthropological Studies operated an archaeological field school on Black Mesa on the Hopi and Navajo Indian reservations under sponsorship of the Peabody Coal Company of St. Louis, Missouri. A total of eight sites was excavated and 56 sites were surveyed. What follows is a descriptive report of these investigations.
It should he emphasized that this report is mainly descriptive, and that interpretations, where they occur, are tentative. These words are being written after the second year of survey and excavation, and it can he assumed that there will be several years more work on northeastern Black Mesa. The decision was made, therefore, to produce descriptive reports of each year’s results and a final summary volume similar to the University of Utah’s descriptive Glen Canyon reports with their final interpretive volume after the close of the final season. The preliminary and descriptive nature of this report also holds true for the ecological data. Also in this regard, the Navajo archaeology will be discussed in a separate volume.
