Cold War-Related Sites in Maneuver Areas 1 Through 8, Fort Bliss, Texas and New Mexico
Author(s): Lori Hawthorne-Tagg
Year: 2002
Summary
Fort Bliss played a pivotal role in the development and training of all Army air defense weapon systems throughout the Cold War. In recognition of the Fort Bliss cultural resource program initiated this project to identity and document Cold War-associated archaeological sites in Maneuver Areas 1 through 8. To that end Fort Bliss Directorate of Environment issued Task Order 11 to Lone Mountain under contract DABT-51-98-D-0042.
A review of existing Fort Bliss site records and archival research identified 49 locations that were field investigated. Twenty-six of these were confirmed to relate to Cold War activities. Of these, four are recommended eligible, 13 are recommended ineligible to the National Register, and nine require further research to make an eligibility recommendation.
