Patterns of settlement changes in colonial Cameroon: a theoretical approach.
Author(s): Martin ELOUGA
Year: 2013
Summary
The theoretical basis of historical archaeology in Cameroon is being set down. Ongoing research in this field focusses on the formative period, european hegemony and the decolonisation of Cameroon. Despite the availability of abundant historical data related to the recent past of Cameroon, questions still come up to which research must find answers: the processes of state formation, subsistence activities and their environmental impact, the relationships between social groups and the reshaping of human settlements during the occupation of Cameroon by European in the 19th century, among others. The effects of the settlement of Germans, French and English in the hinterlands following the victory of the "Triple Entente" over the "Triple Alliance" in 1918 fall in line with the concern. The main purpose of this paper is to propose theoretical tools which will ensure a better understanding of the changes that occured in human settlement during the colonial period.
