Family Housing Condition Assessment Fort Sam Houston
Author(s): Joe C. Freeman
Year: 1998
Summary
This family housing condition assessment for Fort Sam Houston was prepared for the, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, (COE) by TRC Mariah Associates Inc. (Mariah) as directed by a Scope of Work (SOW) issued in April 1998. Fort Sam Houston is a National Historic Landmark (NHL), the highest level of historic designation under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as revised. As a result, Fort Sam Houston’s NHL is afforded a high level of protection. The project was completed as part of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) capital venture initiative. The project involved an assessment of seven groups of family housing to determine conditions, maintenance requirements, and the costs required to bring the buildings to reasonable community standards. Maps of these buildings are presented in Appendix A. The seven groups of buildings represent 403 individual residential buildings and a number of outbuildings. The buildings date from the 1880s through the 1930s and include limestone, brick, and hollow clay tile load bearing masonry construction as well as wood framed structures. All of the buildings that were assessed are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Fieldwork was completed in late-May, 1998 and cost estimates were completed in mid-June, 1998.
