An Archaeological Survey of the Westwing Substation Expansion, Maricopa County

Author(s): Mark R. Hackbarth

Year: 1992

Summary

Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) conducted a Class III archaeological survey of the proposed Salt River Project (SRP) Westwing Substation. The survey was conducted under Permit #92-12 issued to Northland; the survey was conducted on 15 April 1992 by Mark Hackbarth.

Prior to the survey, an examination of site files maintained by the Arizona State Museum and the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office was conducted. Sites have been recorded from the vicinity of the Westwing Substation, but in general are closer to the Agua Fria River. The General Land Office maps, on file at the Phoenix office of the Bureau of Land Management, were examined prior to commencement of the fieldwork; no references to potential historic sites was noted from these documents.

No archaeological sites were encountered during the survey; four isolated finds were recorded. In the absence of significant cultural remains, Northland recommends that archaeological clearance be granted the proposed SRP Westwing Substation expansion.
