An Intensive Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation R-2 and Associated Boroow Area, Richard B. Russell Reservoir, Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979
Part of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979 project
Author(s): Richard A. Warner
Year: 1979
Summary
This report presents the findings of an archaeological survey of a proposed railroad relocation of a section of Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, labeled R-2 in the Army Corps of Engineers maps. An associated 27 acre (10.9 hectare) borrow area was included in this survey. The results of the survey of the borrow area indicate that one potentially significant prehistoric archaeological site labeled Site //2 (Borrow Area R-2) does exist within the borrow zone and will require additional mitigation work. Two other sites located in or near this project area are advised for clearance.
The survey of the proposed railway relocation identified two prehistoric and one historic site directly within the corridor. None of these sites possess potential for significant data recovery, and clearance is advised for all of railroad relocation R-2.
