Intensive-Level Architectural Survey for the Aircraft Carrier Aviation Integrated Test and Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment Facility at Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, Ocean County, New Jersey
Author(s): Department of the Navy, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic
Year: 2009
Summary
The Navy is proposing to construct an Aircraft Carrier Aviation Integrated Test/Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment Facility at the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, located in Lakehurst, Ocean County, New Jersey. Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic contracted TEC Inc. to prepare a command-specific Cold War historic context and conduct an intensive-level architectural survey of 24 buildings built prior to 1990 that will be affected by the proposed project to evaluate their eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The context discussion addresses the entire installation; however, the survey was limited to affected resources, and not all Cold War buildings associated with the installation. The purpose of this report is to provide information in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended.
The architectural survey inventoried and evaluated 24 buildings located across a wide area in the western portion of the installation. The buildings consist of shops, storage, administrative, and test facilities scattered among various test sites at Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. Twenty-two of the buildings were constructed during the Cold War era (1946-1989); of these, 16 were constructed between 1957 and 1959. The two remaining surveyed buildings are post-1990. The 22 Cold War-era buildings were documented using New Jersey Historic Preservation Office survey forms and 35 mm color film.
None of the buildings had been previously surveyed or evaluated. Analysis of the field and research data indicates that none of the surveyed buildings meet the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation or the guidelines for identifying and evaluating Cold War military resources, and therefore, none are recommended eligible.
