National Register of Historic Places Registration Form: Lakehurst Lighter-Than-Air Historic District [Draft]
Author(s): John Joyce
Year: 2005
Summary
This is the draft nomination form for the Lakehurst Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) Historic District and incorporates revisions to the contributing elements list as identified in a 2004 condition assessment. The LTA Historic District represents a cluster of early air transportation facilities located in the heart of Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst, formerly known as Naval Air Station (NAS) Lakehurst. The district comprises 74 contributing properties and 10 non-contributing properties. Contributing properties are buildings and structures constructed between 1919 and 1953 as part of the Navy’s LTA aviation program that involved operation of both rigid and non-rigid airships.
The district is dominated visually by six large airship hangars, the most imposing of which is Hangar 1, and includes an industrial area and arms that extend northwest to a residential and administrative area, northeast to include Hangar 4, and southwest to Landing Mat #1, the site of the 1937 Hindenburg crash. The district also has two non-contiguous outlying areas—Hangars 5 and 6, Landing Mat #3, and various support facilities and the Cathedral of the Air and associated grounds–and one isolated property, the Radio Transmitter Building.
