Author(s): Sean Fitzell; Susan Hathaway; Cynthia Auman
Year: 2002
Summary
As part of ongoing cultural resources management work at Hanscom Air Force Base (AFB), the Headquarters Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (HQ AFCEE) contracted Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons) to perform Phase I archaeological surveys at the Sagamore Hill Antenna Complex (AC), Hamilton, Massachusetts and the Eagle Hill Antenna Facility, Ipswich, Massachusetts. Both facilities are GSUs (Geographically Separate Units) affiliated with Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts. The 66 SPTG/CEV at Hanscom AFB has determined that these investigations are required in order to comply with Section 110(a)(2) of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (NHPA).
Investigation of the Sagamore Hill AC was based upon an earlier assessment of the property conducted by the Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc. (PAL) (Willan and Glover 1994).Utilizing a specific list of variables in assessing the potential for both prehistoric and historical archaeological resources to be present, the PAL survey resulted in the identification of nine areas exhibiting moderate probability for the location of historical resources. The goal of the Phase I survey was to provide an overview of the archaeological resources at the facilities for incorporation into the existing Hanscom AFB Cultural Resources Management Plan (Earth Tech 1996). More specifically, the purpose of the Phase I archaeological survey was to identify any archaeological sites and to assess, in a preliminary manner, the potential National Register eligibility of any sites identified. Tasks associated with
the successful completion of the archaeological survey included: background research, preparation of a research design, field investigations, laboratory procedures, management recommendations, and report preparation.
