Historic Property Evaluation, BOMARC Facility & SAGE Building #1907, McGuire Air Force Base, NJ

Summary

The U.S. Air Force contracted John Cullinane Associates to complete an architectural investigation to evaluate the Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (BOMARC) facility and Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) Building 1907 historic properties, New Hanover Township, Burlington County and Plumsted Township, Ocean County, New Jersey. The investigation was completed in accordance with Section 110 of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office (NJHPO) guidelines for architectural history survey. The BOMARC Facility and SAGE (Building 1907) were elements in the military defense systems developed during the Cold War era. Field investigations included photo documentation of existing conditions and completion of NJHPO Individual Structure Survey Forms.

The survey evaluated 26 support buildings and structures and 84 launch shelters that comprise the 60-acre BOMARC missile launch site, which was built between 1957 and the early 1960s based on a standardized plan for eight such facilities at U.S. Air Force bases. The survey also evaluated the SAGE building, constructed in the mid-1950s to house computer and control systems for the BOMARC missiles.

In 1992, the NJHPO determined the BOMARC Facility eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A for its association with Cold War era air defense of the New York-Philadelphia corridor. In 1994, , the NJHPO determined the SAGE Building (1907) has exceptional significance at the national level and is eligible for inclusion in the NRHP under Criteria A and C for its association with Cold War era air defense of the New York-Philadelphia corridor and its unique construction. The investigation recommended the BOMARC facility and SAGE facility eligible for inclusion in the NRHP as resources of exceptional importance that retain integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
