Summary
A combined Phase I and II cultural resource survey was carried out in connection with the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s proposed replacement of Bridge’s 0317-156 and 0317-157 along a stretch of U.S. Route 130 in Mansfield Township, Burlington County, N.J. These bridges cross the abandoned alignment of the Delaware and Atlantic/Columbus, Kinkora and Springfield Railroad which formerly extended between Kinkora and New Lisbon. These studies were focused on the identification and evaluation of historic architectural and archaeological resources within Areas of Potential Effect. Survey activities involved background research, historic architectural and archaeological field survey, analysis and preparation of this report.
Field survey identified twelve architectural resources of greater than fifty years in age within the project’s historic architectural area of potential effect corridor as being more than 50 years in age, including the St. Michael and Gabriel Romanian Orthodox Church. Of the 12 architectural resources identified, only the St. Michael and Gabriel Romanian Orthodox was found to have the qualities necessary for inclusion of the National Register of Historic Places. The St. Michael and Gabriel Romanian Orthodox Cemetery was deemed to be significant under National Register Criteria A for its connection with the early development of the Village of Roebling, New Jersey and recommended to be considered a non-contiguous contributing resource within the Roebling National Register Historic District. The current project will have no effect on this resource.
The archaeological field survey investigations identified no evidence for significant prehistoric remains within the archaeological Area of Potential Effect. Two potential historic archaeological sites were identified by means of through the examination of previous research and field survey activities. These were the Allen/Carty Farmstead Site and the Delaware and Atlantic/Columbus, Kinkora and Springfield Railroad.
This report is incomplete.
