A Cultural Resources Survey for the Proposed Air Mobility Warfare Center Contingency Operations Compound Site, Fort Dix, New Hanover Township, Burlington County, New Jersey

Author(s): URS

Year: 2000

Summary

This report is a preliminary draft of a cultural resource survey that was conducted between January 19 and March 15, 2000 for a proposed Air Mobility Warfare Center compound site at Fort Dix.

A walkover survey was performed prior to subsurface testing to determine existing conditions. This survey identified the presence of a partially exposed brick and mortar feature in the northern section near 18th Street. Initially, it was unclear whether this feature is part of an intact foundation (possibly pre-dating the 1940s barracks), or a displaced or redeposited fragment. No other surface features were identified during the walkover.

Subsurface testing consisted of 38 shovel test pits which were laid out at 15-meter grid intervals running parallel to 18th street. Artifacts recovered consisted of 164 modern and historic artifacts, which included ceramics and window glass. Features identified consisted of a brick and concrete foundation/pier, builder's trench, and utility trench.

No significant concentration of artifacts or features were encountered during the survey. The survey recovered very few artifacts associated with the 1940's U.S. Army barracks; however, the location has been heavily disturbed and does not warrant a site designation. Since there are insufficient remains that have low research value in the project area, no archaeological site is recommended for recording with the State of New Jersey. No further work is recommended for this project.

This resource is an incomplete version of the preliminary draft of this report.
