Proposed Federal Prison Camp, FCI Fort Dix, Fort Dix, New Jersey, Phase IB Archaeological Survey
Author(s): Gerard P. Scharfenberger
Year: 2002
Summary
A Phase IB archaeological survey was conducted for a proposed Federal Prison Camp to be developed on a site of approximately 6 hectares (15 acres) within the Fort Dix military base in New Fianover Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. The proposed project site’s area of potential effect, or project area, was entirely within the boundary formed by Pennsylvania Avenue to the west, Doughboy Road to the south, East 19th Street to the east, and the junction of Pennsylvania Avenue and East 19th Street to the north. The work was performed for the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons by The Louis Berger Group, Inc.(Berger). The purpose of the investigation was to determine (1) if any archaeological resources are present in the project area, and (2) if any archaeological resources are present that are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and that may be subject to impacts arising from the proposed project.
The archaeological survey consisted of surface inspection and subsurface survey of the proposed project site’s area of potential effect. The results of the survey indicate that no archaeological resources are present within the limits of construction for the proposed facility. Therefore, no further archaeological studies are recommended.
