Summary
On behalf of the U.S. Air Force, the Fort Dix Historic Preservation Office completed Phase I cultural resources survey within the area of potential effects for the expansion of the Air Mobility Warfare Center parking lot on the south side of Building 5656 at Fort Dix, New Hanover Township, Burlington County. This study was completed in accordance with Pinelands Commission regulation 7:50-6.155(a).
Field investigations included pedestrian survey and excavation of 117, 25-foot and 50-foot interval, 12-inch diameter shovel tests arrayed as a grid. In addition, nine 20-foot interval, radial and judgmentally positioned shovel tests and 2, 2ft by 5ft test units were completed to investigate a partially uncovered outbuilding foundation.
The survey identified two possible historic foundations interpreted as a map-documented circa 1850 house foundation (“Havens”) and a map-documented circa 1876 stable/barn mortared stone foundation (“Stacey Well”), which was delineated by subsurface probing as an approximately 30ft by 35ft. Artifacts recovered clustered in 7 discrete areas, 6 of which were interpreted as related to nineteenth century occupations within Pointville: Loci 1 &2 (Pointville Hotel Stables); Locus 3 (Levi Parker House); Locus 4 (Dr. John Well House); Locus 5 & 6 (Stacey Well House & Outbuilding). Locus 7 represented a historic artifact cluster with a mean ceramic date of 1809 that could not be attributed to a map-documented structure. None of the loci contained sufficient cultural material to represent potentially significant archaeological resources. No further archaeological fieldwork recommended.
