Summary

The following report describes a cultural resources reconnaissance carried out in connection with the proposed upgrading of seven range areas at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Three of these areas (Ranges 6, 9 and 11, totalling 124 acres) are located in New Hanover Township, Burlington County. The remaining four areas (Ranges 61, 65, 85 and 9300, totalling 1026 acres) are located in Plumsted Township, Ocean County.

These cultural resource studies were carried out by Hunter Research Associates under subcontract to Tectonic, an architecture, engineering and planning firm based in Somerville, New Jersey. A cultural resources reconnaissance was requested in this instance by the Philadelphia District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in compliance with AR 420-40 (Historic Preservation).

The proposed upgrading of the seven ranges will involve various tasks, including construction of service roads, installation of new targets and associated utility lines, filling and draining of wetlands and erection of observation towers.
