Phase I Archaeological Survey of a Proposed Parking Lot [4465 Texas Ave] at Ft. Dix, Township, Burlington County, New Jersey [Draft]

Summary

On behalf of the U.S. Army, AMEC E&C Services, Inc. (AMEC) contracted Kise, Straw & Kolodner, Inc. (KSK) to complete a Phase I cultural resources survey within the area of potential effects (APE) for a proposed 0.86-acre parking lot on Texas Avenue within Fort Dix, New Hanover Township, Burlington County. The purpose of this study was to identify potentially significant prehistoric and/or historic archaeological resources associated with map-documented mid-nineteenth century building foundations and/or associated shaft features (wells and privies) associated with the former Pointville village. This study was completed in accordance with Section 106 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.

Completed between October 12 and 13, 2004, archaeological field investigations included ground penetrating radar (GPR) and cesium vapor magnetometer remote sensing by AMEC (see tDAR report 438580), pedestrian survey and excavation of 26, 12-inch diameter shovel tests.

Analysis of the GPR data indicated that no linear stone/brick building foundations or circular shaft features were present in the project footprint. Analysis of the magnetometer data indicated that small amounts of metal were distributed throughout the project area. Both the GPR and magnetometer instrumentation picked up a significant anomaly (Anomaly D/2) below the present ground surface that was interpreted to be a possible fuel tank. Ground-proofing by excavation revealed that the anomaly was a collection of rusted fence posts and their buried concrete bases between 4-8 feet below the present ground surface. The shovel test results documented that d 1-4 distinct episodes of twentieth-century fill that extend to a depth of at least 2.5 feet or deeper in all parts of the APE. No archaeological resources were identified in the project area and no further cultural resources studies were recommended.
