VAFB-1997-02: Eligibility and Effects Determination for Archaeological Site SBA-2127

Summary
This document is a report that supports the United States Air Force proposal to correct an access road deficiency on Point Sal Road on Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB) in Santa Barbara County, California. The proposed improvements include the removal of debris and loose materials from an eroded roadside gully on the east side of Point Sal Road, backfilling the gully with non-expansive, organic-free dirt fill, and reconstructing the embankment with a concrete drainage channel. A prehistoric archaeological site, CA-SBA-2127, lies adjacent to the project Area of Potential Effect (APE) on the west side of Point Sal Road (Figures 1-1 and 1-2). This site was recorded by Gibson (1987) as a light-density scatter of Mytilus sp. shell and Monterey chert flakes; one sandstone mano fragment was observed on the surface. Gibson estimated site limits of approximately 2,000 square meters based upon surface survey and limited subsurface testing.
