Summary
During the months of May through July of 1994, personnel from Panamerican Consultants, Inc. undertook an intensive-level survey for cultural resources of the Palachucola Wildlife Management Area. The area includes three separate tracts - Westvaco, Treadwell, and Maner - totaling some 6,811 acres. The tracts are located in the counties of Hampton and Jasper, South Carolina. The project area is mostly forested with pine and lowland hardwoods, divided into upland terraces, swamps, and bottomland landforms.
The objectives of the investigation were: 1) to locate any and all cultural resources within the Palachucola tracts; 2) to evaluate the resources as to their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places; and 3) to provide a context for the understanding of the settlement/subsistence history of the area from prehistoric to historic periods.
The survey strategy designed to locate the resources included the walking of systematically placed transects at 30-meter (m) intervals, combined with shovel tests excavated at 30-m intervals. Visual inspection of areas of standing water or terrain otherwise subject to flooding, as well as other obviously disturbed areas, was also part of the survey strategy. The survey resulted in the excavation of a total of 16,928 shovel tests, the documentation of 65 new sites, and the redocumentation of one previously recorded site (38HA93). Thirty-six prehistoric and 48 historic components were identified at the 66 sites. Of the 66 sites, two (3.03 percent) were considered eligible, 39 (59.09 percent) potentially eligible, and 25 (37.88 percent) not eligible.
