Archaeological Testing at Las Canopas, Phoenix, Arizona

Author(s): Chad V. Kirvan

Year: 2006

Summary

Knox Electric is planning to construct a commercial building on a privately owned vacant lot at in Phoenix. The Phoenix City Archaeologist reviewed the application for a building permit to ensure that the proposed development was compatible with historic-, cultural-, and character-preservation goals of the Phoenix General Plan (City of Phoenix 2001:245 248). The review determined that the project is within the mapped limits of a prehistoric archaeological site known as Las Canopas [AZ T:12:137(ASM)], which is the remains of a Hohokam village. The site was recorded decades ago and has been masked by subsequent development. The City Archaeologist concluded that the proposed project has potential to disturb or destroy archaeological deposits within Las Canopas. Pursuant to the Phoenix General Plan, the City Archaeologist recommended that the project area be tested prior to construction, and that measures be implemented to avoid, reduce, or mitigate impacts that the proposed development would have on any significant archaeological resources that might be present.

Knox Electric retained URS Corporation to conduct the archaeological testing recommended by the City Archaeologist. This document describes the project area and its environmental and cultural history context, briefly summarizes prior relevant research conducted in the vicinity, presents the research questions formulated to guide the field investigations and analysis, and documents the results of the archaeological test trenching and artifact analysis. Because the project is located on private land, no Arizona Antiquities Act permit was required for the archaeological testing, which was conducted between 14 and 23 December 2005. Chad Kirvan directed the fieldwork and Cassandra Albush, Eric Cox, and Margaret Windsor served as crew members. Dr. A.E. (Gene) Rogge served as principal investigator.
