Archaeological Testing of Four Sites at the Sonoran Foothills Residential Development in North Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary

Soil Systems Inc. contracted with Sonoran Foothills L.L.C. to conduct a cultural resources overview and survey of private land as part of the Sonoran Foothills residential development in North Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The project area was surveyed in February 2000 and resulted in the recording of four archaeological sites, AZ T:4:259 (ASM), AZ T:4:260 (ASM), AZ T:4:261 (ASM), and AZ T:4:262 (ASM [Ellis 2000]). Three of the sites were prehistoric and one was historic. In addition, 108 isolated occurrences of artifacts were identified in the project area. The three prehistoric sites (AZ T:4:259 [ASM], AZ T:4:260 [ASM], and AZ T:4:261 [ASM]) were recommended by Ellis (2000) as being potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The historic site (AZ T:4:262 [ASM] was recommended as not eligible for listing on the NRHP.

A testing plan for the three potentially eligible sites AZ T:4:259 (ASM), AZ T:4:260 (ASM), and AZ T:4:261 (ASM) was generated in September of 2000 (Breternitz et al. 2000) and testing fieldwork was conducted in two sessions, October of 2000 and June of 2002. During the first fieldwork session a fourth potentially eligible site, AZ T:4:300 (ASM), was found north of AZ T:4:261 (ASM). As a result, AZ T:4:300 (ASM) was also tested. Based on the testing results, two sites, AZ T:4:259 (ASM) and AZ T:4:260 (ASM) are recommended as not eligible for the NRHP and two sites, AZ T:4:261 (ASM) and AZ T:4:300 (ASM), have sufficient integrity and significance to be recommended as eligible for the NRHP. However AZ T:4:261 (ASM) and AZ T:4:300 (ASM) were thoroughly documented during testing and no further information potential exists at either site. No human remains were encountered and no further treatment is recommended at any of the four sites.
